His account of the struggle of these people to survive amid abject poverty, unsanitary living conditions, and the legal and political chaos that reign in the Mexican borderlands explains without a doubt the reason so many are forced to make the dangerous and illegal journey "across the wire" into the United States.
More than just an expose, Across the Wire is a tribute to the tenacity of a people who have learned to survive against the most impossible odds, and returns to these forgotten people their pride and their identity. Tijuana-born Urrea calls lice, scabies, typhoid, etc. This is a small volume on Luis Alberto Urrea's experiences on the border regions around Tijuana and San Diego, working with missionaries helping the poorest segments of Mexican society such as those Luis Alberto Urrea.

Another story about a corrupt cop of Tijuana who claimed he never hit any of the gringas up for mordidas, only had them perform fellatio in lieu of jail time. Is that the book? I read it recently, too, and found it very interesting. I agree the writings a little uneven, but his passion and his descriptions make up for it.https://deimiponsdipu.cf
